After the Braces/Invisalign treatment is completed teeth are held in their new place using Retainers. This phase of orthodontic treatment is the most important phase of the treatment as bone remodelling of the jaws is completed during this phase to stabilize the teeth in their new bite. There are different types of retainers as mentioned below. No single retainer is ideal for all and the choice of the retainer is dependent on the extent the teeth had to be moved during treatment and the nature of the final bite.

Fixed Retainer

FIXED RETAINERS

Fixed Retainers are bonded directly to the inside surface of your front teeth. They are very effective to prevent your teeth from shifting. Patients are advised to floss or use interdental picks regularly behind the retainer to ensure their teeth are clean. If the retainer becomes loose or the wire fractures, please call our office immediately to have it fixed or replaced and thus prevent your teeth from shifting.

UPPER HAWLEY RETAINERS

Upper Hawley Retainer is used to provide a hold to the upper teeth. It is usually worn initially on a full-time basis and later at night only, or as recommended by Dr. Sood.

Upper Hawley Retainer
Essix Retainer

ESSIX RETAINER

Essix Retainer is used instead of upper Hawley retainer for patients who prefer the look of retainer. It is usually worn initially on a full-time basis and later at night only, or as recommended by Dr. Sood.

VIVERA RETAINER

This is a retainer that is very similar in design to the Essix Retainer and is supplied by manufacturers of Invisalign clear trays. A set of 4 Invisalign Retainers are provided and hence that justifies the additional fee that is charged for the ordering of Vivera Retainer.

FAQs About Retainers

The Vivera retainer and Essix retainer are the two types of retainers that are used most frequently. These are made from different materials and have various benefits.

The Vivera retainers are made of transparent plastic and are designed to fit over your teeth in the same way as a mouthguard would. It is quite pleasant to wear in addition to being almost undetectable. The main benefit of the Vivera retainer is that it can be easily removed for eating and cleaning.

Essix Retainer With Tooth are also clear plastic, but they fit snugly over your teeth like a second skin or a mouth guard. However, they are less comfortable to wear than Vivera retainers.

The best way to decide which retainer is suitable for you is to consult an orthodontist. They can help you choose the best option based on your individual needs.

After your braces have been taken off, you need to be sure to wear your retainer as directed. This will assist in keeping your teeth in the new position for as long as possible.

This typically means wearing them for 22 hours per day initially and taking them out to eat and brush your teeth. You should also remove your retainer when playing sports or other activities with the risk of damaging it.

You should also wear them as instructed by your orthodontist in order to get the most out of your retainer. This typically means wearing them at night while you sleep at a later stage. It is also possible to remove them so that you may eat and clean your teeth.

A retainer is not meant to be worn while eating; thus, you should remove them before mealtime. This is due to the fact that the retainer can trap food particles and bacteria against your teeth, which can contribute to the development of cavities. Furthermore, eating with the retainer can damage the retainer and alter its fit.

If you want to remove your retainers, put them back in their case and put them somewhere secured. Never place your retainers in your pocket by wrapping them in a napkin or tissue. Someone may toss them away without realizing it; Hence, always store them in the retainer case.

Make sure your retainer is kept in a secure location that is out of the reach of any pets and far from any sources of heat. It is not a good idea to carry your retainer in your pocket since this might cause it to get damaged. Instead, it would be best always to store your retainer in a protective case.

It would be best to brush your retainer daily with dish soap and water. Utilize a soft-bristled toothbrush to avoid scratching the surface of your retainer. You might also let it soak in a denture-cleaning solution. Ask your orthodontist about the best way to clean your particular retainer. Retainers should be cared for properly!

Contact your orthodontist as soon as possible to set up an appointment if you have any inquiries or need to explore the possibility of changing your retainer. You should attend all of your scheduled appointments so that the orthodontist may check on your retention progress and make any necessary adjustments.

It is possible that your teeth will shift to where they were before you started your treatment if you do not wear them as prescribed. Hence, following the instructions of your orthodontist on the use of your retainer is of the utmost importance.
