Dr. Sood is an expert in the field of Orthodontic Pain. He has published in journals in this field. He believes in the application of light forces to induce tooth movement through braces. This helps to reduce the discomfort and to optimize rate of tooth movement.
Self-ligating braces differ from the traditional metal braces by the way in which the wire is secured inside the bracket slot. With traditional metal braces, the wire is held by an elastic colour tie. Where as with self-ligating braces, the wire is held by a built-in spring clip that is part of the bracket.
The philosophy behind self-ligating braces is that since it is a metal clip that secures the wire in the bracket the following physical advantages would ensue resulting from less friction from the metal wire sliding against a metal clip in contrast to an elastic tie binding to the wire and inducing a higher frictional resistance to the sliding of the wire through the bracket as the teeth shift:
Self-ligating metal braces are the most common type of braces amongst our younger patients. They are made of high-quality stainless steel.
Self-ligating white braces are less visible than metal braces. They are made of ceramic and do not stain. Hence, they are more commonly used on older teenagers and adults.
