FAQ

Orthodontists are dental specialists who have trained by attending full-time orthodontic program at a dental school for 2-3 years after becoming general dentists. We treat problems with the position of the teeth and jaws. We use braces, Invisalign aligners, and other orthodontic appliances to correct these problems.

The primary reasons for seeking orthodontic treatment are improving aesthetics and functioning of the bite. A pleasing smile enhances your self image and the way others perceive you. Also, teeth that are aligned well make it easier to maintain good oral hygiene and help the forces of the bite to be transmitted evenly to the surrounding tissues thereby increasing the longevity of your teeth and improve overall health.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that a child who may need orthodontic treatment should come in for a first visit around age 7. However, you are never too old to be a good candidate to seek this treatment.

The common conditions of teeth that are crowded, have spacing, or are protruded forward are self-evident can benefit immensely from this treatment. Other behaviours like thumb sucking and mouth breathing that can influence teeth and jaw positions, sleep apnea and speech impediments can also be treated using orthodontic appliances.

Braces/Invisalign aligners work by placing constant, gentle force on the teeth and jaw bones in a controlled direction to slowly move the teeth to the desired position.

This is dictated by the stage of the treatment. With braces/Invisalign aligners it is typical to monitor patients initially at longer intervals (8-12 weeks) and at shorter intervals closer to the completion of the treatment (4-6 weeks).
