We know that life happens, and sometimes braces break. Whether you’re at school, work, or home, a broken bracket or poking wire can be frustrating and even a little uncomfortable. The good news? Most orthodontic emergencies aren’t as scary as they seem, and we’re here to walk you through what to do if your braces break.
First Things First: Don’t Panic
A broken brace doesn’t mean your treatment is ruined. These things happen, and we’re just a phone call away. Stay calm, take note of what’s wrong, and give us a call as soon as you can. We’ll guide you on whether you need to come in right away or if it’s something that can wait a day or two.
Common Orthodontic Emergencies
Here are a few issues you might run into—and what you can do about them:
1. Loose or Broken Brackets
Brackets are the small metal or ceramic pieces attached to your teeth. If one comes loose, try to leave it in place if it’s still attached to the wire. If it’s completely off, store it in a clean container and bring it with you to your appointment. Either way, avoid sticky or hard foods until we can fix it.
2. Poking Wires
Wires sometimes shift and start poking the inside of your cheek or gums. Ouch, we know. If this happens, you can try to gently push the wire back into place using a clean pencil eraser or the back of a spoon. If that doesn’t work, place a small piece of orthodontic wax (which we gave you at the start of treatment) over the sharp end. It’ll protect your mouth until we see you.
3. Loose Bands or Wires
If a wire pops out of a bracket or a band feels loose, give us a call. We may recommend coming in, especially if it’s causing discomfort or affecting your bite. In the meantime, you can try tucking the wire back in place or covering the spot with wax for comfort.
4. Soreness or Mouth Irritation
Some soreness is normal during treatment, especially after adjustments. But if a break causes extra discomfort, you can rinse your mouth with warm salt water and stick to soft foods until it settles down. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help, too—just follow the label instructions.
When to Call Us
If something doesn’t feel right, always reach out. Even if it seems small, it’s better to check than guess. We’ll let you know what to do next. And if you’re not sure whether it’s an emergency, call anyway—we’re happy to help.
